Surge protection — common questions

Isn't a surge protector power strip enough?

A power strip only protects what's plugged into it, and it's not built for the large transients that come in off the utility line. A panel-mounted device takes the big hit at the service, and strips handle the small remainder at sensitive electronics. The two work together — that's called layered protection.

Will whole home surge protection stop a direct lightning strike?

No device can guarantee protection from a direct strike to the structure, and we won't tell you otherwise. What a surge protective device does handle is the far more common problem: nearby strikes, utility switching, transformer events, and surges generated inside the home by large motor loads. That covers the overwhelming majority of surge damage we see.

What's the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 surge protective device?

Type 1 devices are rated for the line side of the service disconnect, often at or near the meter. Type 2 devices install on the load side, at the panel, and are the most common choice for a home. We look at your service equipment and available space and recommend accordingly — sometimes both, in a layered arrangement.

Is surge protection required by code in Georgia?

For a typical house, no — and we'd rather tell you that than sell you on a rule that doesn't exist. Georgia's amendments to the 2023 NEC specifically exempt one- and two-family dwellings from the surge protection requirement in Section 230.67. It is required on services for other dwelling units, dormitory units, hotel and motel guest rooms, and patient sleeping areas in nursing and limited-care facilities. So for a single-family home this is a voluntary upgrade, and the decision is just math: the cost of the device against the cost of the equipment sitting behind it. For apartments, condos, and the occupancies listed above, it's a requirement, and we handle it as part of the service work.

How long does a surge protective device last?

They wear out. The internal components absorb energy over time and after a large event, so most units have an indicator light or audible alarm that tells you the protection is spent. If yours is dark or showing a fault, the device is no longer protecting anything and should be replaced.

How long does installation take?

A straightforward panel-mounted installation is usually a short appointment. What can extend it is panel space, grounding and bonding that needs correction first, or a service that requires a line-side device. We tell you which situation you're in before we start.
